Revolutionary Renovations at ND!

By: Rachel Heaney
Notre Dame; this name holds a lot of history, meaning and legacy. We are the Fightin' Irish, and there is a reason for this name; we are known for of our constant strength, determination and perseverance through obstacles. We are fighters and will not give up through any challenge. However, because Notre Dame has always been people driven, we are constantly changing as a community and school. We are changing the face and image of Notre Dame day by day, through new attitudes, new additions, and recently through revolutionary renovations.
From April through September, a project was underway that would forever change the face of the school. This project, that cost millions, was funded by the schoolboard, with the goal to give ND a more modernized, polished look while providing much needed upgrades across the school. Cosmetically, as you walk through the hallways, you will notice lockers have been replaced with new ones, to reflect the school colors of navy blue, grey and white. The hallways have been repainted with a similar color scheme. As you enter the gym you will notice it has become more modernized, with new colors and logos, yet the past traditions of the school still shine through. Structurally, a new workroom has been added (for the Religion Department); which has a more open, and welcoming look. Two classrooms (Rm 138 and 139) have been turned into project-based learning classes which allow for more student success. Lastly, new bathroom stalls and showerheads in the changerooms give these areas a much-needed upgrade. The changes that would have the biggest impact on the efficiency of ND students happened in the areas of technology, The Learning Commons and the heart of ND; the football field.

Technology at Notre Dame is everywhere and has heavily impacted the education and lives of Notre Dame students. Modern technology is a smart, easy and efficient way to introduce new learning styles, techniques and programs that are vital for students in today's society. As a part of the updates and renovation Notre Dame has introduced new, cutting edge, technologies that can help improve student success. To start off, there are two new 'Mac labs' featuring Apple products to help improve student the quality of work. In addition, over 100 other computers were repurposed, and 150 new Windows based computers were purchased to put in computer labs, classrooms and teacher workrooms. Additional 'Smart Boards' were put in the school, to improve the overall learning experience for students, and televisions were placed across the building to promote Notre Dame programs and the Notre Dame Community both inside and outside of the school. In the future, Mr. Cordeiro (our Principal) is planning to purchase a 15x30' screen to improve presentations and events for future years to come. In conclusion, technology is a very important part of our generation's future, and these changes to the school are vital for student success.

In the centre of the Spectrum, and at the centre of our school sits an equally important place that needed some re-vitalizing as well, the Library. Unlike new technology, the library has been around for decades, and while still a necessary learning area, students today have different needs than they did decades ago. Notre Dame's library will be transformed into a 'Learning Commons' that addresses these new needs. The new Learning Commons will help inspire students with STEAM activities and mirror a post-secondary approach to the Library. Here, students will be urged to take control of their futures. The new layout will encourage conversation among students of Notre Dame and gives students accessibility to student laptops and computers that can greatly help them achieve academic success. Additionally, there are tables with plugs to make it more convenient for Notre Dame students to complete their work on their own devices. Furthermore, this area encourages the senior students to prepare for post-secondary schooling by enabling project-based learning and more. To conclude, the new Learning Commons makes for a calming yet inspiring place that can help with the stresses of our modern world.

Through the gym hallways, you will find doors looking onto the Notre Dame field, where so many important events have happened. Pink Day, floodlight matches, and championship games are to name a few. This year, Notre Dame made a drastic change to the field that will change school sporting events forever. The track has been repainteds o that it will improve future sporting events, the turf has been replaced and a vibrant ND logo was added that will amplify school spirit and pride from every corner. Our principal, Mr. Cordeiro recognizes that our students and community matter and that we must give them the best that we can.

Though Notre Dame has always sought to offer something new each year, this year has had more drastic changes and renovations than other years, including altering the colors within the building. The forest green that was projected through hallways, lockers, and on walls, was changed to a navy blue. When asked about the colour scheme Mr. Cordeiro stated that it gives us a more modernized, polished, professional look, in addition, he said that it is unique to other school communities. To add on, this color adds to our traditions, pride and legacy. A lot of positive changes have taken place since Mr. Cordeiro became principal, and he feels that creating a physical learning environment that invites student voices, and engagement is the most important one. Mr. Cordeiro's overriding vision is to create a sense of community and family around the school that is welcoming and non-judgmental in accepting all ideas.

Although this year we have had great changes, we must always focus on what the future of Notre Dame will hold. Mr. Cordeiro has various goals for Notre Dame in the future; we will continue to lead the board in student achievement and excellence. We will continue to build our capacity and the delivery of curriculum. We will grow our community through the events that we host, and themes of social justice will be radiated. Lastly, more project-based learning like S.T.E.A.M will be highlighted, to help our students meet the needs of tomorrow.
Overall, these updates to our school are the beginnings of new memories. We have always been strong, brave and proud. Now we can be stronger, braver and prouder! We are the Fightin' Irish; This means that strength, passion, motivation and perseverance is in our blood. So, let’s educate, inspire, and motivate future youth so that Notre Dame’s legacy will never be forgotten. #GoooIrish!

ND Field Hockey: Great Expectations

By Daniella Lopez
Both are reigning HCAA champions, both have high expectations, both are high caliber teams; the Junior and Senior Girls Field Hockey teams are set on proving they have the ability to defend their trophies. “Obviously last year we had a good run,” says Emily Clark, a fourth year Field Hockey Player, "and this year we want to defend our HCAA title.”
That doesn’t seem like too much to ask considering the Senior Girls Field Hockey team won their season opener 2-0 on September 17th against St Ignatius of Loyola.
Since that game the Senior team, has gathered momentum, posting an undefeated record thus far. “The girls have been working on their skill development and are supportive of one another,” says Capri Dennis a senior student on the Field Hockey Team. Claudia Fornal another senior student says, “Being able to be on a winning streak at the beginning of the season is a really great feeling to have!” While Emily Clark adds, “hopefully we can keep the ball rolling.”

And keep the ball rolling they must! OFSAA is a big goal for the team this year, and one they feel is attainable. The number of wins the girls already have “gives the senior players a lot of hope to make it to OFSAA this year,” Fornal says. Could we see a Senior Girls Field Hockey Team heading off to OFSAA? Only time will tell, but with “talented, hardworking and enthusiastic” teammates Clark says, “it will be a good season.”
Reflecting on her time as an ND Field Hockey player Emily Clark stated “It’s crazy to think how fast time flies, this being my fourth and final year wearing the Irish on my chest is very bittersweet, and I think the other seniors would say the same. With that said it’s all the more motivation to make each game count. It’s such an honour and privilege to be on the team and be part of a great group.”
But back to the current season at hand, “With this success the team has done great in maintaining sportsmanship,” Dennis says about her teammates and their mentality on the amount of wins they have achieved thus far. It’s good to know the Irish are respectful to all players on and off their team. “It doesn’t build you up to tear others down, so I am proud to say that [we] have been keeping [our] head[s] down, staying humble and playing to win.”

And if the Senior team keeps playing at the same level they are, even beyond maybe we’ll see the Irish Senior Girls Field Hockey team off to OFSAA.
Meanwhile, the Junior Girls Field Hockey Team started their season on September 23th against St Thomas Aquinas at Notre Dame and unfortunately came up short. Coach Caroline O'Brien has noted that though there are many players new to the sport, the team is improving by leaps and bounds every day. As the girls get more comfortable and confident playing with one another as a team the wins should begin to pile up! ND has a tradition of Field Hockey excellence, and this year should be no different. #GOOOOIRISH |
My Last First Day at ND: A Grade 12 Reflection

By Sophia Divita
I BLINKED AND NOW I’M IN GRADE 12! Who would have known how fast four years can go by. It’s absolutely crazy to think that this is my last “first day of school” at Notre Dame. My grade and I have only one more year to leave our mark here at Notre Dame. I hope that when we leave, the younger grades will remember our school spirit and continue to pass it down.
It seems like just yesterday that I was wandering the halls for the first time, trying to find my first period French class. I was lost, confused and extremely overwhelmed; So much has changed. This year, I walk in with my Prefect shirt on and a smile on my face. My four years here at Notre Dame have changed me into a completely different person. I used to be relatively quiet, now I am Co-Prime minister of student council with one of my best friends Kayla Power, I am Head Prefect and Class President of Business Leadership. I no longer stress about raising my hand in class, finding my way to the bathrooms or admitting when I need help. It’s a good feeling to walk through the front doors seeing familiar faces, knowing that you belong in the Notre Dame community.

Although so much has changed, some things always stay the same. I can forever count on Chemistry to be confusing, to be really hungry by period 4 and to constantly wonder why even when it’s -10 degrees, we choose to wear shorts. I guess that’s the beauty of going to Notre Dame. Even though we dress like it’s summer all year round, the staff accepts and loves the student body anyways.
Grade 12 is a stressful time…. There's plenty of conversation regarding what our plan for next year is. Every hall I walk through, I get asked at least once “Sophia have you decided what you want to do next year?”. I struggle to answer the question. I don’t even know what I want to have for dinner tonight. There’s a lot of things I want to do next year. I want to see Spain, I want to make a really good cake and I want to learn sign language. In regards to universities however, all I know is that I’ll be completing some type of Business Degree at a university that I think is a good fit for me.
However, even though I don’t want it to be, this is my last year at Notre Dame. I hope to leave an impact on the younger students, to be someone who they can look up to. Even when I leave Notre Dame, I take pride in knowing there will always be a crazy load of school spirit and a place that I can look back and see family. I love you Notre Dame. GO ND, GO ND, GO!!!!
