NOTRE DAME SENIOR
ATHLETES OF THE MONTH
Madisson Fonseca (Grade 11)
Sport: Field Hockey Uniform #: 7 How long have played Field Hockey? I started playing field hockey in grade 9, at Notre Dame. Do you play any other sports in school or outside of school? At school I have been and or will try out for the ice hockey team, alpine team, soccer team, and badminton team. Outside of school I play Junior U22 ice hockey for the Stoney Creek Sabres. Although in the past I have played box lacrosse, and competed in equestrian competitions. Favorite Sport to play? Through every sport there are definitely pros and cons, but I enjoy the competition each one has to bring especially when competing as a team. If I were to rank the team sports I play the most often from my favorite to least favorite it would go like this: hockey, field hockey, lacrosse. Although my favourite school sport is field hockey. What do you like about Field Hockey?? Besides the high level of competition and athleticism, I enjoy playing with my friends that I usually do not play with outside of school. Through wins and losses our relationship has strengthened, creating a lifetime amount of memoires. What would you say has been your most memorable game? Personally, the most memorable game for me was against Assumption for the 2021 HCAA Finals. Although we fell short and lost 0-2, everyone gave it their all. This game is so memorable to me for a couple reasons, starting off with the fact that it was 7℃. During the game we had strong hits, fast decision making and quick turnovers. Even though we lost, I felt like we won because we were winning all the little battles; first to the ball, hard hits, good positioning, being an option. Favorite sport to watch on TV? Overall while watching sports on tv, I personally do not have a favourite but I do enjoy watching hockey, boxing and race car driving. Favorite Athlete: One of my favourite athletes is Bobby Orr. For those who don’t know who he is, he is a former Canadian hockey player. He played on the Boston Bruins for 10 seasons creating the reputation for being known for his skating speed, goal scoring and playmaking as a defense. Any advice you would give to anyone who wants to try out for your sport? The advice I would give to anyone trying out for any sport is leave knowing you gave it your all because hard work beats talent. Quitters never win and winners never quit! Vertical Divider

Avery Mahoney (Grade 11)
Sport: Golf How long have played Golf? Since I could hold a club Do you play any other sports in school or outside of school? Used to play Hockey and Lacrosse (only golf now) Favorite Sport to play? Golf What do you like about Golf?? It's the hardest sport in my opinion because if you are aren't playing your best it's your job to turn the round around and play better on the back 9, not like other sports you have teammates so if they play good you guys will win. Kinda hard to explain What would you say has been your most memorable game? The Canadian Junior in Montreal this was a cool experience because the first day I shot 78 and was outside of the cut line, was nervous cause its the biggest event in Canada for juniors. I was telling myself I know my game and I can come back tomorrow and shoot a good score to get me back in it which I did I shot -1(71) to put me back inside the cut. Overall I finished 19th out of 155 in my first Canadian Junior ever. Favorite sport to watch on TV? I like to watch Golf on TV because those are the best of the best and I can learn from them. Learn how to hit some different shots or make some smarter decisions. Favorite Athlete: Justin Thomas Any advice you would give to anyone who wants to try out for your sport? It's a grind and when you aren't playing good or not hitting good shots you have to STAY PATIENT and the good shots will come. Getting mad at yourself only makes you play worse. |
