IRISH FIELD HOCKEY HCAA CHAMPS!

By: Daniella Lopez
Notre Dame’s Jr and Sr girls field hockey teams are off to a great start winning the first Halton Championships of the season.
The Sr Girls Field Hockey Team went undefeated in the regular season. Winning all 8 of their games. Notre Dame’s highest scoring games were 6-0 against Jean Vanier and Holy Trinity, while their lowest scores were 1-0 against Bishop Reding and St. Ignatius of Loyola.
While the Sr Girls Field Hockey Team remained undefeated, the Jr Girls matched that feat, never losing a game; winning 5 out of 6 games and tying 1 game. The Jr. ND Squad's highest score was an astonishing 11-0 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas, being held scoreless only once during their tie game (0-0) against Bishop Reding.

With both teams sitting at the top of their leaderboards in their division it was only fitting for both teams to head to the HCAA Championship Game for the second time in 2 seasons. These games were played at Bronte Athletic Park in Oakville on Friday October 19th.

.The Sr Girls team played first at 2:00pm versus Bishop Reding. Within the first minute of the game Notre Dame scored a goal. Almost 25 minutes later Hallie Wedge scored the second goal, putting ND up 2-0. But the team was just getting started, as not even a minute later another goal was scored bringing the score up 3-0. To top off the prominent lead Hallie Wedge scored the last goal ND needed, bringing the score to 4-0. While the Sr team scored all their goals within the first half it was enough of a lead to keep them winning all the way till the end. Any discussion of the game would be incomplete without the mentioning the incredible goaltending of Capri Dennis who was able record a shutout, thus giving the Sr. Lady Irish a resounding 4-0 Championship Victory!
Because of their HCAA win the girls went on to play Dr Frank J Hayden for the GHAC championship on Tuesday October 23rd. The Lady Irish fought extremely hard, pushing the game into overtime. Overtime still wasn’t enough time to declare a winner and the game had to go into shootouts. Penalty shots would decide the fate of each team, and unfortunately the Lady Irish came up short. Everyone is extremely proud of them and we can still call the Sr. Girls Field Hockey team HCAA champs.

The Jr Girls played right after the end of the Senior game (also against Bishop Reding) and were able to score 3 impressive goals resulting in them winning the HCAA Jr Championship. Back to back double gold for the ND Field Hockey Program!
Both Notre Dame Field Hockey teams had incredible seasons and with both being HCAA Champions (again!) we can’t wait to see what’s in store for them next year. Congratulations ladies and GO IRISH!

#NDPinkDay2018

Notre Dame’s annual Pink Day was held last Wednesday on October 24. Keziah Oduro, Notre Dame’s Student Council Co Prime Minister, called the event a “smashing success thanks to all of the staff and students who sacrificed their time and energy to make this day possible”.
Pink Day helped support cancer research by raising money for the Terry Fox Foundation. The Terry Fox Foundation is an organization dedicated to creating a world free of cancer, thus, fulfilling the dream of Canadian icon, and the founder of the Marathon of Hope, Terry Fox. All the money from buyout tickets, Pink Day shirts, and the bake sale goods went to the Terry Fox Foundation. In total, the Notre Dame Community was able to present the Terry Fox Foundation with a cheque for $2,103.53.
The day was jam packed with fun and creative events. It all started with the bake sale during the hour long, communal lunch. Ms. Dussin’s cooking class prepared a variety of delicious treats which were available in the Spectrum. This was followed by a third period buyout for the Pep Rally which took place in the gym. Students crowded into bleachers to watch the incredible performance put on by Notre Dame’s very own Kilt Crew, highlighted by Kenny Sproat’s grand entrance as SpeedoMan, a time-honoured Notre Dame tradition.

The festivities were then taken outside to watch both the Junior and Senior football teams compete. Although neither team came away with the victory, the atmosphere created by Notre Dame’s student body combined with the grade 8 classes from the feeder schools was truly a memorable event.
We would like to thank Notre Dame’s Student Council, The Irish Athletic Association as well as the teachers who sacrificed their time and energy to make this day possible.

For all ye who want to enter the STEM field, I encourage you to immerse yourself as deep as you can into the field while you’re in high school. Never question your abilities, or your intelligence—everyone works at different speeds, and everyone has their own individual learning style. So please, guys, don’t compare yourself to others, because otherwise you’re going to kill yourself trying to be something you’re not. What I wish for you above all else—whether you’re interested in STEM or not— is that you take your high school and postsecondary school experiences as an opportunity for self-discovery. Because the more you know yourself, the more successful you’ll be.”
Lest We Forget: The Poppy Project

By: Alessandra Auletta
This Remembrance Day marks the 100th year anniversary of the end of WW1. Remembrance Day is a memorial day that is observed by multiple countries in the world, and is a day to remember those who fought and died for our freedom.
On November 11th, at 11:00 am the world will pause to commemorate and pay tribute to those that have died in the line of duty, and Notre Dame will be no different.
With guidance from Mrs. Obrovac (Dept Head of Canadian & World Studies), our school community has come together to work on a Remembrance Day project, which involves our very own talented ND students. With the leadership of Mr. Vicic (Dept Head of Tech) and Ms Tolan (ND Art), these very different clubs have come together to combine and share their talents, to create a moving and meaningful display of remembrance, the Poppy.
The Poppy has become an iconic symbol of Remembrance Day, and what better way of commemorating this milestone anniversary then creating our very own Flanders Field. 100 poppies will be on display in the Spectrum at ND to mark the 100 year anniversary of the armistice that ended the First World War.

With the innovative use of 'gibbs-cam' and plasma cutting, Mr. Vicic and his students have created the perfect 'poppy' from steel. The poppy is then painted with a red base and then clear coated to prevent rusting. The completed poppies are then sent to the Art Club and with Ms. Tolan's guidance, artists accentuate and add realistic detailing to each individual poppy.
The poppies will be on display at Notre Dame on November 11th, and can later be purchased as a souvenir for $5.00/poppy. All proceeds from the poppies will be donated to the Royal Canadian Legion, to support our veterans and their families.
So, on November 11th at 11am when we pause and silently gaze upon our own Flanders Field, remember the sacrifice so many have made for our freedom, Lest We Forget the sacrifice of all the fallen heroes.

In September 2018, mere days after the school year began, the race for Student Council positions began. Several elected and interview positions were up for grabs, and it didn’t take long for the application forms to be snatched up. The next two weeks bore the fruits of the candidates labour. Campaign posters of all kinds filtered through the now infamous TV slideshows, capturing the attention of the prospective voter. Students prepared their speeches and sat down in interviews. Finally, the group of dedicated candidates was painstakingly narrowed down to your 2018/2019 Student Council.
Our co-prime ministers, Billy Stewart and Keziah Oduro, already had a chance to introduce themselves last month (they’re always on the ball), you can check that out here.
Aside from our two capable Co-PMs, Student Council is comprised of people from all grades, bringing together the voices of the school. You had the chance to hear a preview of what your Grade representatives have in store for you when they presented their speeches in September, but they can’t wait for you to get to know them better.
Matthew Piersanti - Grade 9 Representative
“This year, I hope we do a lot of things that will make the school even more fun, and have everyone involved in the school!”
Kenna Smallegange - Grade 10 Representative
“I’m super excited to be your grade 10 rep this year. Feel free to talk to me in the halls. Together we can work towards bettering your experience at ND.”

“Based on the brief time that our Student Council has been together this year, I can say with confidence that this year is going to be one for the books. I am so grateful to be a part of this year’s Council, and I can’t wait to work with the student body as a whole to continue to make Notre Dame a symbol of the High School experience”
Student Council isn’t made up of Grade Reps alone, though. The team is also composed of our amazing PR Officers, our talented Secretary, and our innovative Parent Council Liaison.
Clara Kim - Jr PR Officer
“Hi everyone! I am a grade 10 student, and I am involved in this year’s student council as your Junior Public Relations Officer. Through this opportunity, I am thrilled to interact with various individuals and I hope that student council will be able to motivate you to participate in and enhance all our future school events.”
Kayla Power - Sr PR Officer
“Hi there! I’m a Grade 11 Student, and I am also this year Senior Public Relations Officer. I am super excited to be a part of council for this 2018-19 school year and I can’t wait for all the great things we have in store for this school year!”
Hailey Morgan - Secretary
“I’m Super excited to be your secretary for the 2018/19 school year. We have so many exciting events in store for the year and I can’t wait to see everyone share their Irish pride all year long!”
Travis Flippance - Parent Council Liaison
“I hope to help ameliorate the involvement of the Fightin' Irish parents in the Notre Dame community and I look forward to helping out in any way possible.”
And of course, last but not least, our Student Council is run by two amazing teacher advisors, Mme. Tayler and Mlle. Tambasco.
“As the Student Council Teacher Advisors, we are extremely excited to be working with such a fun, energetic and motivated group of students. Our vision for the 2018-2019 Notre Dame Student Council is to continue to build on traditions for the student body that have been cherished by past students, to bring in new and innovative community-building activities and to build lasting memories amongst the students and staff. We look forward to a fantastic year! GO IRISH!”
Now that you’ve had the chance to meet our team, keep an eye out for a new addition to the InsideND roster, Council’s Corner! Each month, the Corner will detail Student Council activities, Notes from Members, and much more.

Quand l'automne commence..... When Fall Begins...
