Notre Dame's Christmas Fundraiser!

Picture
Under the guidance of Mr. Nason, Mr. Bozzelli, and Mr. Giusti, construction, horticultural, co-op, and business students are collaborating to raise money for Notre Dame and charity.  Using our students’ creative abilities and talents along with the equipment and resources available at our school, we have various wood Christmas décor items for sale, designed and produced by Notre Dame Students.  They include engraved Nativity sign; whimsical “Let it Snow” and “Merry & Bright” signs; Santa gift tags; and name tags for stockings or your Christmas mantle!  Our coop student, Megan Schlueter designed and created many of the pieces and in the process learned how to operate the CNC machine and laser engraver!  We will continue to provide our students with real world cross curriculum opportunities to learn and contribute to our community. Look for our products,  which can be purchased via SchoolCashOnline!

Our Co-Op Experiences!

Picture
By Natalie Schmalz
This quadmester, I had the pleasure of working at Chickadee Kids Co for my co-op placement. Chickadee is a toy store geared towards kids ages 0-6, and they sell sensory toys and educational items such as engaging books, toys, and activities.

Because I am in a Business SHSM, most of my work at co-op has to do with marketing. Being a small and local Burlington business, Chickadee relies on local marketing and word of mouth around the community. This publicity exists in online forums such as Facebook, Instagram, Google My Business, and podcasts.

To help draw attention to the business,  I make posts online using keywords, and try to make them different from other toy stores so ours shows us at the front of the algorithm. I write product descriptions for the online store that help with Chickadee coming in the first page of search results.

I also write blog posts advertising for the store’s blog. These posts have to be over 1000 words to appear higher up on the search page and include lots of different words that parents would typically search. I also help the owner reach out to Canadian podcasts to be a guest on, so she can go on a more national platform and sell the business.

This quadmester I was a co-op student with Mr. .Nason at the school. At my placement , my experiential learning includes the areas of learning the CNC machine, Versalaser and Cricut machine. When I graduate I plan on attending Mohawk after I finish my lap year. When I do attend Mohawk, I’m planning on pursuing Registered Massage Therapy (RMT).

I took co-op originally for my career I want in the future but I ended up taking this placement because I couldn't find a placement that would benefit my career but it does go towards my SHSM requirements. I would’ve liked to experience the environment I was planning to go into but my co-op with Mr. Nason has been fun. When I am at my co-op I am responsible for designing, printing and creating products to be sold at Christmas for this year and many more. My day-to-day duties include maintaining my workspace as well as getting as much as I can done and printed or cut-out.

Through my co-op, so far, I’ve learned that learning these new machines can be both fun and challenging and interesting; It’s given me a new art medium to work with as well as show me that a career with technology isn’t really what I would like to do but, it’s a good second choice. Going to this placement has forced me to further develop my creativity, presentation and communication skills that I probably couldn't have done on my own.

 Mental Health & Wellness Update

Anxiety is a common response that most of us experience from day to day. Sometimes it is hard to understand why one thing might cause us more anxiety than another thing. Here is a great video from Anxiety Canada that explains anxiety and how as a society we have moved from being scared of an actual danger to being scared of a perceived danger.

Here are some apps that might be helpful for students in working through their anxiety.

Parent Resources:
It is hard sometimes as a parent/caregiver to decipher if the behaviours your teen is exhibiting are age/developmentally appropriate or if the behaviours are more worrisome and concerning. Below are two great resources from School Mental Health Ontario to help parents/caregivers make that decision. Also, there is a chart displaying some of the developmental milestones teens experience through the years.
