DARE TO 'DREAM'
with ND Business Leadership

This year was certainly a year to remember for Business Leadership and the entire Notre Dame community. After a few challenging years, the 2022 Business Leadership class was able to re-introduce in-person events such as Dodgeball for Ukraine and the Business Leadership Conference. These events showcased our school spirit and helped to unite our community. The 20th Annual Business Leadership Conference, Dare to Dream, was very successful with over 500 participants from Notre Dame, Loyola, and our elementary feeder schools. Each year, Business Leadership students strive to create the best possible conference for all who attend. The Leadership Conference is a venue for students to develop important leadership skills and provide an opportunity for other students to realize their potential. This conference is completely student-run under the guidance of Mr. Barbati and Mr. Reusch.
Over the past 20 years, the conference has hosted some impressive Keynote speakers such as Hayley Wickenheiser, Kaleb Dahlgren (Humboldt Bronco Bus Crash Survivor), Clara Hughes, John Montgomery (The Amazing Race), Justin Trudeau, Paul Henderson, Michael "Pinball" Clemons, Craig Kielburger, Spencer West, and Sarah Blackwood (Walk off the Earth) and Lights.

This year’s Keynote Speaker is Isabelle Weidemann, Canadian Olympic speedskater, winner of Gold, Silver, and Bronze at the 2022 Winter Olympics, and Flag Bearer at the Closing Ceremonies this year! Other session speakers this year included Kelly Samuel (business owner and social media expert), Rosemary Reid (hypnotist and magician), Cheryl Pounder (Canadian Women’s Hockey Player), Dawn Hill (residential school survivor), Shelly Clark (residential school survivor), Kwesi Millington (mental health speaker), Erin Ambrose (Canadian Women’s Hockey Player), Michel Chikwanine (child soldier), and Anastasia Bucsis (Olympic speedskater).
There are a number of individuals who made this year’s event possible. I would firstly like to acknowledge the commitment and effort demonstrated by the 2022 Business Leadership class. This conference is a result of each and every one of you working hard to achieve a collective dream. I have enjoyed working with such an amazing group of students. I would like to extend a big thank you to all of our respected and prestigious speakers. They shared outstanding messages that resonated with each individual who attended the conference. I would also like to recognize all of our generous sponsors for supporting our dreams. On behalf of the Business Leadership class, I would like to sincerely thank our teachers Mr. Barbati and Mr. Reusch. Throughout the year, you have inspired us to dream big. You have shown us that anything is possible through hard work, dedication, and perseverance. We are very lucky to have you model true leadership. I would like to thank Mr. Roberts and the administrative staff for all of their assistance. Finally, to the entire Notre Dame community, thank you for your continued support over the years.
Business Leadership is an amazing opportunity and I highly recommend that you take part in this class to gain the unique skills and experiences that Business Leadership provides. I encourage you to always believe in yourself, take the time to explore the possibilities awaiting you, and strive to achieve your wildest hopes. But most importantly, I challenge you to Dare to Dream.

Goodbye, Farewell
An Interview with Ms.Typer

By Jenna Smith
Grade 10 ND Student
We are so lucky to have had Ms.Typer as our Vice Principal for the past two years. Her participation in Notre Dame has been noted and although we are sad she is leaving we are excited for her next steps in the school board. Before the end of the school year, I was granted the opportunity to ask Ms.Typer some questions about her experience here at Notre Dame and her plans for the future!
Jenna: To begin, would you like to introduce yourself and what your role at Notre Dame has been over the past few years?
Ms.Typer: My name is Shari Typer and I’ve been a vice principal at Notre Dame. This is my fourth year here and my fifth year as a vice principal. I was at St. Thomas Aquinas prior to arriving here. I have worked with two different sets of administration, Mr.Cordeiro and Ms.DeSantis. When Mr.Cordeiro left to be superintendent and Ms.DeSantis left to be principal at another board, we ushered in principal Roberts and Mr. Ilczyszyn who came to us from the Peel Catholic school board.
Jenna: What events, school sports, fundraisers, etc have been your favorite to be a part of at Notre Dame? Why?
Ms.Typer: There are so many that have been great! Pink days have always been fabulous although they can sometimes stress me out. They are sometimes a lot of work but we know that we really enjoy them. The pep rallies, athletic banquets and school plays are always fun because we like to see our students in different lights where they can shine. It's always nice to see them have outlooks where we can see the many different talents so many students have.

Jenna: What was your biggest challenge while working at Notre Dame and how did you overcome it?
Ms.Typer: My biggest challenge has been working through a pandemic! It was certainly nothing we have ever experienced before. It was just trying to work with teachers and help them wrap their heads around the everchanging protocols. We helped students navigate through the mental health concerns and the continuous pivoting schedules. From going to full school, to lockdown, to hybrid learning we really have to be supportive and listen to students and teachers so we could help be that bridge to change.
Jenna: That was definitely my biggest challenge as well.

Ms.Typer: Yes, it was a huge challenge! It was certainly not something anyone predicted but you guys are living history right now!
Jenna: Where are you off to next and what are your next steps in your career?
Ms.Typer: I am off to Loyola in Oakville. I will meet up with Ms. Halycz who is the principal there and who I worked with when I was at Christ the King, she was the department head of religion. I will work with Mr.Busby who is from science who will be nice to work with because that's my background as well. Our next step is to become a STEAM school at Loyola. We are starting to do some STEAM planning and initiatives over there which is exciting! I’ll still be in the vice principal role while I’m there. The nice thing is it’s about the same size as Notre Dame so I’m hoping it will have the same feel and the great community Notre Dame has.

Jenna: Lastly, what have you learned from Notre Dame that you hope to bring with you in the future?
Ms.Typer: That student voice is incredibly important and that building of a sense of community and building tradition. More than ever while working though the pandemic and not being able to see students have the opportunity to work together, demonstrate leadership skills and their creativity showed how hard it is when students aren’t interacting. I think seeing the mentorship our senior students have with the juniors is really important. I’m going into a new community that I don’t know so I think taking skills of knowing how to build strong relationships and interact with the kids is going to stand me in good stead. But, Notre Dame will always have a really special place in my heart.

Jenna: Do you have anything else you would like to say to the students at Notre Dame?
Ms.Typer: It has been a fabulous few years and I wish you all the very best! To the grade twelves who are pursuing their post secondary school pathways, the grade nines still navigating around the school, the grade tens who are finding their paths right now and deciding on senior classes, and to the grade elevens who will be our future school leaders. I just want to say to them to keep being involved and make stuff happen for yourself. Lead by your passion!
That's definitely great advice! Thank you to Ms.Typer for meeting me today to explain more about her role here at Notre Dame and her plans for the future. I know we will all miss her very much but we are also excited for her plans next year and wish her the best of luck!
