GAME OF TIARAS SPARKLES!
By Asia Wolczak
The opening-night jitters were palpable in the air as the lights dimmed and the narrators got into positions; now the fun begins… ND’s play for 2016, Game of Tiaras, was an instant hit with enough humour, excitement and references to last a year. An entertaining crossover between Disney, Game of Thrones, and our English department’s beloved King Lear, this play was an amusing choice. It is a bloody tale about a senile father (played by Caroline Kesik), his trusty sidekick (Allyson Smith), his not-so innocent daughters (Ally McJannet, Felicia Cosentino, Ryka Cerenzia, Karen Decleir, Lara Virgilio, Danielle Martin, Casey Ouano, Anna Wisniewski, Franca Virgilio, Arooj Azeem), and their struggles to gain control over the kingdom. Witty one-liners were delivered flawlessly by a 5-star cast, each playing their own eccentric character in this crazy play, hailing from all grades of the school. Watching them act together so naturally seemed like witnessing an intense battle of wits as the audience laughed and gibed along with the actors. |
Well done to the crew for doing all the behind-the-scenes work that may not be fully seen but is fully appreciated – the great set, makeup, costumes, and tech. Shout out to the members who had to (spoiler!) carry all of those heavy dead bodies off stage between scenes
The skillful work done by Ms. Paradis, director, Justine Katerenchuk, stage manager, and Meghan Rodriguez, technical director, was revealed as the play was exceptionally performed. Numerous hours spent preparing and rehearsing were incredibly rewarding as ND was lucky enough to be presented with a priceless play, one for the books.

MAY-GIVING @ NDBy Michaela Smith
The only thing more important to Notre Dame than our sports teams, our school spirit, and our academics is giving back to our community. This year, The Grad Project is all about helping out those in our community who need help more than ever. Partnership West is a food bank that many of our students are familiar with, as they have been going there to volunteer and package food for those families and individuals who need it more than ever. In Christmas and around December, everyone wants to help others and donate food, but what about in the spring and summer? That’s why, this May 18th-25th, Notre Dame will be having a food drive that not only the grade 12's will be participating in, but the whole school will help! This graduation project is run by our grade 12s, but it’s really for our school as a community. |
Donations are needed badly over at Partnership West, as the shelves are running empty and the demand is high. They need our support, and the students need to work together in order to help them. So during that week in May, bring in as much food and toiletries as you can, and help us to make our community a better place for everyone in it. The most important items that are needed are canned meat, canned fruit, boxes and jugs of juice, rice and instant mixes of noodles, and toiletries such as toothbrushes, soap and shampoo. Help us to make our community a better place ND!
JAZZ NIGHT @ND SWINGS!By: Leanne Young
Life without music would B-flat Tuesday, April 26th, was ND's first annual Jazz Night: a night where students and parents could relax and enjoy a variety of wonderful jazz and contemporary music performed by our very own talented musicians, while fundraising for our bands! This year, we featured our Notre Dame Concert Band as well as our famous Jazz Combo who earned silver at Nationals last year! Both bands have worked very hard throughout the year on preparing and building their repertoire, and it really showed. |
The night began with an opening performance by the Concert Band. Many familiar pieces were enjoyed, including the popular hit Uptown Funk by Bruno Mars, Raiders March from the Indiana Jones theme and Crazy Train by Ozzy Osbourne. Next we had piano soloist Leanne Young who performed a classic piece by Chopin, establishing tranquility right after the heavy metal Crazy Train. Up next was jazz trio Colin Ferguson, Robert Kovacic and Mr. Castiglione who played Fly Me to The Moon by Frank Sinatra, a jazz favorite.
An intermission followed to prepare for the focus act of the night: the Jazz Combo! Featuring 7 musicians, each on a different instrument, they performed a variety of different styles of jazz from ballads to sambas to crazy drum solo parts. The awesome and special thing about jazz music that distinguishes it from many other music genres is space for improvisation in its pieces: the ability to make up what you play, as you play it on the spot. Great job to everyone in the Jazz Combo who improvised in their pieces, it was a magnificent act!
Thank you to all our musicians for an amazing evening as well as everyone who made it out that night to support our school bands; it couldn’t have been a huge success without everyone’s help! Also a huge shout out to the culinary department and Ms. Dussin for making and providing the delicious baked goods to enhance the experience that night!
