Leadership Buckets an Enormous Success!
By Leanne Young
Welcome to the Second Annual Leadership Buckets organized by our very own Business Leadership Class of 2017! If you missed out on today’s buyout, no worries! Every highlight and details of the game are outlined in this article so you’ll be as up to date as anyone who watched the finals live! Today was a another huge success and we’d first off like to thank everyone who participated and/or helped out with the planning and organization this spectacular event. The main goal of Buckets is to fundraise for the annual Leadership Conference held at ND in May (run by the Business Leadership Class as well), and also to boost school spirit and make memorable high school memories! Every team played hard all day in a huge tournament, until the top 2 teams from each division (Junior and Senior) were left to play in the finals. Hundreds of ND students filled the bleachers to watch the final game and cheer on their friends. The Junior Division (gr. 9/10) finalists were on first; “Splash” in white and blue and the “Y Squad” in white and black. |
Within the first minute of the game, 3 shots were quickly taken by both teams. Though they missed, gameplay continued with no fouls and both teams were just as aggressive as the other. Splash took the first victory with #00 scoring the game’s first basket, and led to take on another successful shot bringing the score to 7-0 for Splash. Y Squad immediately took action and passed back and forth to each other, moving their positions closer to the opposing net. Marcus Dorado, grade 9, got his team’s first basket through a free throw leaving the score at 1-7. At 2 minutes and 50 seconds, Dorado got a shot, bringing the score up to 3-7. Feeling positive vibes, the energized Y Squad played so hard #8 on Splash nearly tripped and missed his shot. With less than 2 minutes in the game, #00 on Splash didn’t let his missed hoops bring him down. He continued to take shot after shot. The timer was ticking and there was 10 seconds left. Dorado charged through the court, attempting to make that final bucket. Splash stole the ball at the last second and took the final shot before the buzzer went off. The 2nd half had begun!
Starting off with a score of 5-9 for Splash, 1 player was subbed in for each team. John Seno, grade 10, took the first shot for Y Squad in 20 seconds and barely missed. More balls grazed the rim for both teams as they tried to beat their opponents. At 6:51, Dorado finally got a shot from the 3 point line and Y Squad’s score bumped up to 8. Our 4 referees continued to keep an eye out for fouls. Y Squad got another free throw, and the teams fought for the ball as it went out of bounds again. At 4 minutes left, the score was tied at 9-9! Charlie Lisac took a basket for Y Squad and they were now ahead at 11-9! The ball was flung across the court and Seno sprinted after it, catching it before it reached the boundary line. Through lots of fast action, Splash got another shot at 1:30 tying the score again to 11-11. With only 1 minute left, Y Squad took the lead again with 14-11. Soon after, Splash got a 3 point shot tying the game yet again at 14-14 with 30 seconds left! The game went into 1 minute overtime and the intensity was high. 1 minute to make it count! Splash dribbled and weaved their way across the court, but they couldn't make a basket. With only seconds left, Y Squad took back the ball and Dorado chucked it at the last second with all hope on the shot…and the ball cleanly swooshed into the basket. The crowd stood up and cheered! Y Squad won the game with a score of 17-14, congrats to our Junior finalists!
Immediately after Y Squad’s victory, the Senior finalists ran out onto the court, ready to fight for the championship title. This game featured “Vanilla With a Dab of Chocolate” in white with grade 11’s on the team and “No Name” in bight yellow with grade 12’s. Jaylen Passley, grade 11, took the first shot of the game for Vanilla but missed. Patrick Connor, grade 12, made 2 quick shots and also missed. In a blur, No Name’s Kurtis Page weaved through the crowd and dunked the first basket of the game, giving Yellow a 2-0 lead. Page continued to make amazing plays, including an incredible steal, swiping the ball in mid-air from 4 other players all jumping for it. With 5 minutes and 13 seconds left Jaylen got another shot and the score becomes 3-2 for Vanilla. Vanilla struggled with No Name’s tall blocks. Would they get a shot? Yes they did! Melina De Lulio shot a basket and rolled off the ground, ready for another play. Passley brought the score to 6-3 for Vanilla with another basket, and followed shortly with another dunk while Page flew through the air above him in a block. No Name scrambled on their toes, trying to bring back the score as Banyte saved the ball from running out of bounds at just over 3 minutes left. Jaylen swiftly shot yet another bucket, but Bryce O’Farrell knocked the pass right after clean from the air. Passed to Page, he dribbled slowly across the court, analyzing each player’s positions. After fast feet and rapid arm movements, Passley scored a shot at less than 2 minutes left. Passley was on fire while rocking in his purple shorts! Through passes, missed shots and dribbles, the score was 3-16 at less than a minute left in the first half. Banyte dodged sideways from a tall Vanilla player and tried to pass to her team for a final shot. There was 10 seconds left. Jaylen caught the ball and sailed it toward the hoop. 2 seconds left. It missed the net. The buzzer went off, and half time begun.
With 8 minutes to go, No Name got the ball after the face off. Kranz slipped as he took a shot for Vanilla but quickly got back up. After a free throw by Patrick Connor for No Name, Brad Smith and Passley confronted each other with quick footwork. Smith made the shot and tripped but recovered. Less than 5 minutes left and the score was 5-21 for Vanilla. O’Farrell dribbled across the court and made a quick pass to Page, who slammed the shot in! Vanilla scored a basket shortly after, and it was game on! Page made a free throw after knocking out Matteo Podda in an attempted ring shot. Podda landed hard but recovered quickly. With 2:20 left, the score was 9-27, still for Vanilla. Our grade 12 team had a lot of catching up to do if they wanted to bring home the plaque. Page made yet another lightning fast shot as he sprinted across the court. De Lulio dashed out of nowhere and made a clean steal to Page’s pass to B, giving Vanilla the ball. Jordan took the shot for Vanilla and as the ball neatly dropped into the basket, the crowd cheered! Jordan, a.k.a. “J Money”, then showed off his style while playing in shades for the whole game. Vanilla may have had the lead, but No Name wouldn’t accept failure as an answer. As the clock ticked its final seconds, Smith chucked the ball with everything he’s got. 2 seconds left. It sailed through the air. The audience watched intently. 1 second left. Maybe? 0 Seconds left. It barely missed the rim. With a final score of 15-31, Vanilla With a Dab of Chocolate took the win for the Senior finals. Both teams had some amazing skills, and although it was a tough loss for No Name, the support for both teams was unreal. Awesome job to both teams!
Leadership Buckets’ success is all thanks to our players, staff, students who bought out, and especially the Business Leadership Class for making this possible. Our school’s support was amazing today as well as our school spirit for our sports civvies! Everyone looked great in their favorite jerseys and sportswear as well as in their team uniforms. Great job to all our players and teams, and a shoutout to all the teams who didn’t make the finals (because you are super awesome for being a part of this year’s tournament). Spread the spirit ND, we look forward to what next year’s Leadership Buckets will bring!

Sherlock is a hit!By Emily Nobes
Extra edition, extra edition! Notre Dame drama brings Sherlock to the stage! Read all about it! It all started November 28th, when the cast of Sherlock Holmes met together for the first time, their first read through. After auditioning and waiting in suspense for the cast list to be carefully selected and posted, everyone in the room was excited to get started with what was what sure to be another amazing production by ND drama. Led into battle by director Justine Katerenchuk and producer Ms. Paradis, the cast began 4 months of rehearsals full of laughter, friendship, and an all around determination to make this year’s production a great one. |
In early February, sign up for the crew opened up. I signed up right away and was so excited to have the opportunity to work with a group of peoplethat I knew would be amazing. I had the honour of working on lighting and sound with technical director Meghan Rodriguez and stage manager Laryssa Pichocki, as well as everyone else involved in the cast and crew. The two months that I attended rehearsals were a whirlwind of last minute adjusting, costume fittings, and excitement. As show day drew nearer, everything fell into place. The hours spent together were finally paying off, and the show was as so polished that you could see your reflection in it. On March 2nd, we all gathered back stage as different, more inspired people than we walked in, all buzzing with excitement and energy that we were ready to channel into our work. Songs were sung, doors were opened, snacks were sold and, finally, the curtains rose.
In the play, the tragic death of a young girl in love with a prince (portrayed by Zac Maj) leads to the discovery of letters that could easily put long standing tensions into action. These letters need to be found and protected, but the girl’s sister, Alice Faulkner (portrayed by Erinn Roberts) won’t give them up easily. Kidnapped, tortured, and starved, Alice refuses to give up the letters. So, Sherlock Holmes (portrayed by Nicholas Simao) is sent in on behalf of the insurance company that wants the letters. This catches the eye of professor Moriarty (portrayed by Emily Perrino), who puts his plan into action to sabotage Holmes, and to acquire the power he needs to be feared by all nations. The game is afoot! Each racing against each other, tensions rise as they both fight to gain Alice’s trust and retrieve the letters. Moriarty sees only one way to victory, the death of Sherlock Holmes. Seemingly outwitted, Sherlock and Alice are kidnapped by Moriarty and his henchmen (portrayed by Rosalyn Mutheardy, Danielle Martin, and Colleen Forbes) and tied up in an abandoned warehouse, left to be blown to bits. But Sherlock would not accept defeat that easily. In the nick of time, Sherlock is able to escape with Alice and head back to Baker Street, where Watson (portrayed by Mitch Callaghan) waits. With the help of detective Lestrade (portrayed by Issac Kovacic), the group is able to capture Moriarty. Thanks to Alice, the letters are returned to their rightful owner and the case is closed. But for Sherlock, the game is never over, but that just elementary, my dear reader.
The curtains fell in front of the smiling cast and crew, glowing with their accomplishment. Thus began the whirlwind of hugs, tears, and cheers, celebrating a job well done. Months of dedication and hard work paid off.
“I wasn’t expecting much,” Says Kayla P, a grade nine student here at Notre Dame, “but I was very pleasantly surprised with what I saw! I had a wonderful time at the play and even wished to go a second time! I cannot wait for the future plays our school will produce the hope to see the actors return for another year!”
Overall, Sherlock Holmes will always hold a special place in my heart as my introduction to the amazing world that is ND drama, and will undoubtedly go down in history as one of Notre Dame’s best.

GIRLS NIGHT IN @ NDBy: Daniella Lopez People say it’s one of the best events you’ll go to in all of your high school life. Organized by all the female teachers it's a way for girls of all shapes and sizes. Whether your athletic or artistic, to come together and make new friendships, step outside your comfort zone and most importantly have fun. Many different activities come with this night, doing a huge zumba class with every single girl who comes and doing other activities in smaller groups. Different activities include: knitting, |
yoga, henna, self-defense, boot camp, women in media, friendship bracelets, skin care the list goes on. With this amazing night comes even better food cooked by Ms. Dussin our lovely chef. Homemade pasta, salad, and let's not forget the dessert.Prize baskets can also be won from makeup to nail polish to gift cards almost anywhere. At the end of the night “swag bags” are given out by lovely sponsors who help with the event. You even get a free t-shirt that says girls night in. All of this for only five dollars!!!
I had the amazing experience of going to girls night in last year. I was in grade 8 and I was really excited to come. But I was also nervous what if I wasn’t with my friends? I didn’t know many people, only the people who came from my school. I had so much fun that night I did skin care, friendship bracelets and my favourite part of the entire night was the henna done my Notre Dame students themselves. To make the night even better I won a prize! I was so excited and shocked because I was one of the last people to have one something. That night was something I’ll never forget.
Making new memories, stepping outside of your comfort zone and most importantly having fun with friends. I hope all of you girls go at least once because you don’t know if you like it unless you try it.
