The championships took place in Windsor, Ontario on March 8th and 9th, where school swim teams from across Ontario went and competed. It was 2 days filled with excitement, nerves and teamwork. The girls of the Notre Dame Swim Team, that went to OFSAA, participated in the open girls 4x100 relay and the open girls 200m freestyle. The girls gave it all they had and came in 8th in their heat for relay and 20th in their heat for freestyle. Their |
spirit and determination throughout the championships made the Notre Dame community extremely proud to have these amazingly talented girls representing the school. There is no doubt that the Notre Dame swim team will be back in action at next year’s OFSAA to compete and represent the community once again.
'GIRLS' NIGHT IN A SMASHING SUCCESS!
By Selena Mercuri
The evening of March 3rd was buzzing with excitement as ND hosted its annual Girls' Night In, an event meant to empower girls and stress the importance of being kind to one another. The staff and students involved in the diligent planning of this wonderful night managed to create a true sense of community among those attending. The evening began with a session of Zumba in the cafeteria that was both enjoyable and energizing, followed by ice-breakers, requiring brain-power and team-work. The girls then went to the gym to listen to motivational speaker and Oakville YMCA Peace Award winner, Molly Burke. Molly was diagnosed with a rare disease that caused her to lose her vision. Despite the many obstacles she has had to overcome, including mental illness, Molly has managed to come on top and be an inspiration to many, including the girls who attended the event. After the presentation by Molly Burke, the girls headed back to the cafeteria for dinner and many took home raffle prizes, given from sponsors such as Shoppers Drug Mart and Banana Republic. |
One of the main highlights of the evening was the great variety of workshops such as Knitting, Healthy Headspace, Self-Defense, Henna, Skin-Care and Stereotypes of Women in the Media. The workshops taught girls things like different ways to develop high self-esteem and a variety of activities that calm the mind. The Stereotypes of Women in the Media was a particular eye-opener, stressing the importance of realizing the ways that the media influences society's expectations of women and blows them out of proportion.
The girls then headed to the gym once again for a session of yoga to calm and refresh the mind and the night was beginning to come to an end with more raffles. The girls attending went home with a gift bags, eagerly awaiting the next Girls' Night In.
Thanks goes out to the staff and students involved in planning the night's events. Girls' Night In would not have been possible without months of dedication and hard-work!
