Notre Dame Celebrates Black History Month
By : Tiana Kayemba
Black History Month is a time for us to learn more about the history of Black Canadians in Canada, and Black History all over the world. As Canada is a diverse country, with people of many different ethnic backgrounds, it is important for us to take some time to recognize the history of individuals who have shaped our country into what it is today. As we work toward recognizing Black History year-round, Student Council worked to put together a series of events to recognize Black History this February.

With the help of Mr. Giardina, Student Council was able to post daily quotes by different Black Figures on the InsideND Instagram page. These posts highlighted inspirational messages from some well-known figures, such as Dr. Martin Luther King, as well as other Black Figures who may be less known, but just as inspiring, such as Dr. Mai Jamieson. By sharing these daily quotes, we were able to help students connect Black History, and the voices of black individuals, to their everyday lives.
Student Council also put together a Kahoot, in order to inspire learning and education about Black History. The Kahoot featured many questions about Black History in order to inspire learning. By participating in activities such as Kahoots, which can allow us to deepen our understanding of Black History, and Black History in Canada, we are able to learn more about the world around us and foster education to better expand our knowledge.

One of the highlights of our Black History Month Events was the opportunity to have 3x Olympian, Neville Wright, talk to us about some of his experiences. Mr. Wright spoke about his athletic journey, his disappointments, and how he was able to overcome his disappointments and adversity. He also gave us a chance to understand the values he learned throughout his journey, and the importance of a growth mindset. Neville Wright taught us that no matter who you are, or how you define yourself, it is important to persist and chase after your goals. He gave us the inspiration we needed to hear, and reminded us that in order to succeed, you will experience failure, but the important thing is to never lose hope, and continue to fight to achieve your goals. He taught us to remind ourselves “I CAN! I DO! I WILL!” to help us get through the challenging times we may face. We are very appreciative that we had the opportunity to work with Mr. Neville Wright in bringing this presentation to our students.
In order to make a difference in our world, and inspire change into creating greater peace in our society, it is important to recognize events that celebrate the beauty of diversity. Black History Month has given us the chance to better educate ourselves, but the journey to learn more about black history and culture should not just be confined to one month. This is why we encourage you to keep exploring black history, and the history of other cultures, every day. Take the time to better educate yourself and others about the different cultures out there. At Notre Dame, we want to recognize that just because Black History Month is over, doesn’t mean we should stop celebrating it. This February has given us the opportunity to learn more about different cultures, and we hope to continue to learn more about one other as a community, every day!
