LEADERSHIP BUCKETS 2K16!
By: Leanne Young
Welcome to the very first annual Leadership Buckets, previously known as “Hoops for Heart”, and organized by our very own Business Leadership Class! If you missed out on today’s buyout, no worries! Every highlight of the game is outlined in this article so you’ll be as up to date as anyone who watched the game live! Today was a huge success and we’d first off like to thank everyone who participated and/or helped out with this spectacular event. The main goal of the Buckets is to fundraise for the Annual Leadership Conference held at ND in second semester (run also by the Business Leadership Class), as well as Irish Cares to help those in our community. Leadership Buckets is also about School Spirit and making fun high school memories! Teams participating in the Buckets played hard all day in a huge tournament, until the top 2 teams from each Division (Junior and Senior) were left to play in the finals. Hundreds of ND students filled the bleachers to watch the final game, kick-started with a short video featuring most of the teams from the day’s tournament. The Junior Division (gr. 9/10) finalists were on first; We had the Allstars in bright red and the Monstars in solid black, facing each other in a 5 on 5 game. |
Within the first 2 minutes, the Monstars shot a basket for 2 points. Gameplay continued with no fouls, and the Allstars subbed in a new player, #0, who got a basket in one shot from the 3 point line within seconds of taking the court. The Allstars tried to keep their offense but the continuous aggressive plays from the Monstars led to the black jerseys’ victory. With 10 seconds left in the 1st half, the score was 3-2 for red until #5 got a basket at the last second, putting Monstars in the lead. #5 also got another basket from the 3 point line as soon as the 2nd half started. Scoring the majority of the baskets for the team, #5 (you may know him as Jaylen Passley), a grade 10 who yet again scored another basket with 2 players blocking him at the same time. The only female on the team, #24, also scored a basket after Passley’s shot. After 12 minutes of play, the black jerseys won the game with a score of 7-11, congrats to the Monstars!
Immediately after the Monstars’ victory photo, the Senior Finalists were on the court, ready to fight for the Championship Title. This game featured ‘Skye’s the Limit’ in blue with Grade 11s on the team and Sham Yao in pink with Grade 12’s. Sham Yao’s #6 made the first basket of the game, followed by a basket from #3 at the 3 point line. Skye’s the limit really pushed their limits however and got a few baskets in the 1st half. In a blur, Vaughn Lucyk (#24) made an incredible steal, having successfully jumped in front of a pink player and swiped the ball in mid-air from a pass, outsprinting everyone else to the basket and scoring 2 points for the team. He also made another basket from the 3 point line shortly after, with Lucas Parente (#19) scoring another 3 point basket. A jump ball was initiated with 22 seconds left in the first match after two players wouldn’t let go of the ball. Skye’s the Limit called a time out to regroup the team. They were in the lead at the end of the 1st half with 10-8, however, Sham Yao came back hard in the 2nd half. At a minute left in the 2nd half, the score was 10-13 for Sham Yao. A minor foul in the last few seconds of the game prevented team blue from attempting to make a basket to tie, resulting in a triumphant victory for Sham Yao! Great job to both teams!
After the winners were announced, the traditional Teachers’ Game began! Joked to be look-a-likes, Mr. LeBlanc and Mcavoy, #24 from senior champions Sham Yao faced off with a jump ball. The Teachers snagged the ball and scored the first basket of the game, Sham Yao scoring the 2nd right after. Mr. Freeman barely missed a basket and had some very swift moves on the court. Our teachers, (including a former ND graduate), played hard and worked together as team, eventually winning with a 7-11 score. They’ve proven their winning streak yet again, but who knows, maybe one of you reading this right now will be on the winning team in the future. ;)
The Leadership Buckets was such a successful event today, all thanks to our players, staff, students who bought out, and especially the Business Leadership Class for making it possible. Our school’s team spirit was fantastic today, as well as our support for World Autism Day! Everyone looked great in blue as well as in their team jerseys. Great job to all our players, and a shoutout to all the teams who didn’t make the finals (because you are already super awesome just for participating and being a part of this year’s tournament). Spread the fun, spread the love and spread the word ND, we look forward to next year’s Leadership Buckets 2k17!

WOMEN AS CAREER COACHES
By Selena Mercuri
The Burlington Convention Center was buzzing with excitement as eight-hundred students and career coaches assembled for the twelfth annual Women As Career Coaches Event. "WACC is an event that celebrates women: their goals, pathways and accomplishments," was the way the event was described in the press release. Students attending this free event had the opportunity to network with various career coaches including teachers, foresters, accountants, and women in advertising, along with many other positions. Various guest speakers spoke about the good and the bad of their careers and Some of the guest speakers included Ashley and Veronica from the blog "citygirlscapes", Shannon Cuciz from Global News, and keynote speaker, comedian and singer, Jessica Holmes. |
The evening began with a buffet style meal and introductions at tables. Afterward, the speakers discussed their career paths and reasons for taking those paths. Jessica Holmes entertained the crowd with impressions of Julie Andrews, Kim Kardashian, and Ellie Goulding and stressed the importance of being supportive and kind to one another.
The girls attending this inspiring night learned that they have an unlimited number of opportunities that come with hard-work as they choose their own career paths, and that they should find something they enjoy to do.
Be sure to attend the next annual Women As Career Coaches for another great night!
